Tal-Ko Racing Works Assisted Drivers

At Tal-Ko Racing we take our products and their quality very seriously. We have always been involved with a works assisted driver project since the company was first formed over 50 years ago. With this driver test and race programme we have found that it is a vital and a very reliable way to evaluate and improve our equipment range from simple components right up to complete Karts and Engines.

Nearly everything Tal-Ko manufactures is produced using 50 + years of race / manufacturing experience and with the latest software 3D CAD design facility.

When all of this is coupled with the driver project we can then be sure we are producing and selling to our customers the very best of race winning equipment at realistic prices.

We have always enjoyed our racing and the involvement with the drivers over the years and we are very proud of their achievements within the Formula TKM classes and beyond.

Please see below the works assisted drivers who are in this years team project.

I started racing in 2012, just before my 9th birthday, racing a cadet 6bhp kart for 8-13 yr olds, taking my first podium 3 months later. I won the Trent Valley Kart club winter series 2012/2013.

In the cadet classes I set fastest laps, had numerous heat wins and podiums and set lap records at Fulbeck and Rowrah.

In early 2015 due to my growth spurt, the decision was made to immediately switch to the Junior TKM class for 11-17 yr olds, moving onto a full size chassis with a TKM 15bhp engine.  Quite a step up. We decided to purchase a used Tal-Ko Veloce chassis and TAG BT82 engine. Both proved to be very fast.

Despite minimal testing I competed in the Super One round at Buckmore Park, setting fastest lap during the race, only being pipped by 0.05 sec for that honour in the last lap. Again at the S1 round at Larkhall in  Scotland,  I just missed qualifying on pole by 0.01.

At Kimbolton I qualified on pole for both the TKM Maxxis Festival and the British Open championship, taking my first national ‘A’ race win at this event.

At the S1 round at Shenington I set fastest lap in all 4 races, led my first British championship final and stood on the podium for the first time with a very close 2nd place finish. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TdNMlgU9zs

Abbi's hidden talent, natural on a horse from 3 years old, until horsepower took over. Also plays for the school football team. Mum Karen and sister Jaime are both still equestrian based. Dad Andy is a former champion on 4 wheels as well as 2, taking a number of Oval racing titles in the 80's then on 2 wheels in 2005, winning on a 750 Suzuki.

Being picked to be part of the Tal-Ko Racing Team has been the highlight of my karting career. The whole team work very well together are very supportive of each other. Racing with Tal-Ko is fun but the desire to win and prove the equipment is the driving force and so I will do my best in 2016 to succeed.

To start 2016 off for Abbi she was presented with the following 2015 awards at the BWRDC: Kartsport Trophy for highest points scorer,  Best Junior Driver & The Mary Wheeler Memorial Trophy for overall club champion, the youngest ever by miles. Abbi finish 2nd in the 2016 British Junior TKM S1 Championship.

The 2017 Season so far and Abbi is now Jnr TKM O Plate Champion as well as taking the Maxxis TKM Festival Jnr TKM Elite Title.

Abbi had a fantastic 2017 season by taking the MSA JUNIOR TKM British Championship title which meant she had acheived the TREBLE which had never been done before.

For 2018 I will again compete in Junior TKM and may also do some car racing if a budget can be found.

My first experience of driving was driving the tractor at home on the family farm, from there I moved to two wheels by competing in Motocross/Enduro events with my dad. I began racing karts in March 2011 when I joined my local schools kart club.  I raced an 85cc Raket kart winning the National Schools Kart Championship in 2012.

In 2013 we decided to move to MSA in Jnr TKM racing in the Northern Championship and still competing in NATSKA and in 2014 we competed in the Northern TKM Junior Championship coming 4th and also breaking the lap record at Hooton Park on a v-clutch engine.  I also finished 2nd over all in the NATSKA championship.

In 2015 we decided to move up to Super One to compete at top level in Junior TKM. In my first year Ifinished 13th over all, and in 2016 I finished 5th over all winning the final round at PFI after qualifying on pole position. In August 2016 having competed in my first Maxxis TKM Festival I managed to win the Jnr TKM Elite Final.

Family: Dad Robin (Chief Mechanic), Mum Heather (Chief Supporter), Brother Charlie (Media Officer) and my late Grandad Whittingham raced karts in the early 1960s.

In 2016 we felt extremely privileged to be asked by Alan Turney to join the 2017 Tal-Ko Racing works assisted driver program, making this the highlight of my karting career.

In my first year competing in TKM Senior Extreme for 2017 I finished in 9th place in the MSA SENIOR TKM British Championship.

For 2018 I will compete again in TKM Extreme.

I first got into karting when I went in the garage and saw all of my dad’s karts from when he used to race. My first time in a go kart was when I was 4 years old in a CRG puffo kart on a local airfield in 2004. Then I progressed to a 60cc cadet kart (wtp) and practised every Saturday at a local non MSA kart track till I was 7 years old when I did my first race at non MSA. I also as a bit of fun used to practise on my dad’s senior TKM 4-stroke CRG road rebel.

In 2008 when I was 8 years old I did my ARKC’s test at PFI and then I practised and raced at PFI, Kimbolton, Ellough Park, Blackbush and Shennington. In 2011 I decided to race in the LGM championship and came 12th in my first year. Then in 2012 as my last year as a Cadet we did the LGM championship again and we came 5th with numerous other podiums throughout the year.

Moving up to Jnr TKM in 2013 we quickly got used to the simplicity of the class and quickly got up to speed with the front runners in Super One. We did a guest round at PFI and qualified 5th and got 3rd in one of the heats. Also in that year we competed in the PFI club championship and secured 2nd overall.

In 2014 we competed in the Kimbolton TKM club championship and after winning 4 of the rounds (April, October, November and December) we came 2nd overall even after having to miss the September round due to an injury.

In 2015 I decided to have a go at the TKM Junior British championship (Super One) and managed to achieve 2nd in our first year after a lot of consistent results.

In 2016 we moved up to Senior TKM Extreme and came 2nd at the first round out of a grid of 48 drivers. At the end of the year we secured 5th in the championship.

In 2017 after a lot of bad luck but having a really good weekend at our local track Fulbeck, where we used to race a lot in cadet and loved the challenge of the track, we came 7th overall.

For 2018 we have joined the Tal-Ko Racing driver programme which is a major boost and I am hoping to win the MSA Senior TKM British championship on the Tal-Ko Veloce kart with this support from Alan Turney and Tal-Ko Racing.

My first kart experience was at my friends go kart party which was held at an indoor circuit in Corby, I loved it so much that we joined the cadet club there which was ran by a volunteer from Mercedes AMG in Brixworth. After a month I had set the lap record there and not long after that we bought our own project one Honda Cadet kart.

In May 2014 we started racing at stretton circuit in Leicester and having done well here we looked and racing elsewhere and joined the MSA and raced at Whilton Mill and PFI with the Honda Cadets.

After we finished with the Cadet class and a short period in Mini Max & X30 we moved to the TKM Junior class using a Tony Kart and a Direct Drive TKM and started racing at Kimbolton, Shennington and Fulbeck,

After about a year the Tony kart cracked beyond repair and we purchased a second hand Tal-Ko Veloce Kart with a TAG TKM engine, which I loved from the start and I've had some great results with including being East Anglia champion at Kimbolton, 2nd at the Maxxis TKM Festival in the Elite final and Junior TKM Club champion 2017, also doing well in other TKM championships. I've had a great year appearing on Motors TV and YouTube thanks to TDI media.

I was so proud when Alan Turney asked me to join the Tal-Ko Racing works assisted driver programme and hope to have more great results in 2018 and promote the team and myself with my Instagram page.

Richard Marsh / Ace Mechanic & Team Judge for Best Kept Works Kart
D.O.B. 28.08.1982

I first raced a kart in August 1993 for my 11th Birthday at a local indoor circuit. I finished 2nd in the junior championship the following year. In 1996 my parents bought me a junior TKM outfit and I had my first race at Dunkeswell kart circuit. I regularly raced at Clay Pigeon and Rissington as well. We had some great times and I met some great people, who I am still in regular contact with. In 1998 I moved into senior TKM and Extremed my original and only TKM engine which I still own today! The TKM senior class was the best and closest racing I have been involved with.

I then built a MK2 VW Golf GTI and raced in a national championship for 2 years visiting many of Britain's largest tracks. I won the first race and finished 2nd in the championship. In 2008 I started to Co-drive in a rally car with ex TKM team mate Stuart Bliss, we have had some great results and still compete now.

I then raced a miniature Nascar  (Called Mascar) on short circuit oval tracks.

After I hung up my karting boots in 2004. I then started mechanicing for Simon Vercoe in Junior TKM, we had some great results and formed a great relationship with him and his Family.

I have also been helping Tal-Ko with their assisted driver programme and have enjoyed working with Alan and the Team. We have all learnt a lot along the way and enjoy working with new drivers and are focused for every season.  I also am joint judge with Alan on who has the best and worst kept kart in the team.
