This is the most popular engine raced in the UK.
Originally a favourite in the USA where it dominated
racing for several years. It has paved the way in low
cost ultra close karting
For more than a decade it has been the power pack
for the Formula TKM class where the accent is on
equal cost effective racing for everyone, not just
those with the largest pay cheque.

Although basically one engine type, this piston
port style unit is available in two specifications
100cc for the Junior class with 5 weights / Carb
Restrictor sizes and 115cc for the Senior
Extreme class without Carb Restrictor except
for the lightweight 146 class. 100cc
engines can inexpensively be upgraded to 115cc.
Junior TKM ( 123 / 128 / 135 / 142 / 148 )
New Junior 100cc engines come either in
direct drive, Horstman clutched, or TAG (Touch &
Go). The Direct Drive unit is started old style
traditional method. Horstman Clutched unit is
started with a lightweight hand held electric
starter supplied at additional cost and the TAG unit
is started with a touch & go onboard starter system.
To make for fairer, safer and closer racing suiting
all sizes and weights of the Junior drivers whose
ages in theory can vary from 11 - 17yrs the simple
power to weight rules has been introduced.
Juniors can now all race together choosing what
weight and power band that will suit them
Juniors 123 with a min 123 Kg race finish
weight use a 19.5mm BLACK anodised carb restrictor.
Juniors 128 with a min 128 Kg race finish
weight use a 20.5mm GOLD anodised carb restrictor.
Juniors 135 with a min 135 Kg race finish weight
use a 22.0mm BLUE anodised carb restrictor.
Juniors 142 with a min 142 Kg race finish weight
use a 24.0mm PURPLE anodised carb restrictor.
Juniors 148 with a min 148 Kg race finish
weight. No restrictor required.
The switch from one junior power band to another
takes just moments by simply changing the carb
restrictor.
How to choose what band suits you
taking into account the maximum
permitted kart weight without driver ready to
race for each band
123 Black band is 90 Kg /
128 Gold band is 88 Kg / 135 Blue band is 86 Kg / 142
Purple band is 83 Kg / 148 band is 81 Kg
Driver must be a minimum of 30 Kg with all race gear to
race in the Junior TKM 123 Band with Black Carb
Restrictor
Driver must be a minimum of 40 Kg with all race gear to
race in the Junior TKM 128 Band with Gold Carb
Restrictor
Driver must be a minimum of 49 Kg with all race gear to
race in the Junior TKM 136 Band with Blue Carb
Restrictor
Driver must be a minimum of 59 Kg with all race gear to
race in the Junior TKM 142 Band with Purple Carb
Restrictor
Driver must be a minimum of 67 Kg with all race gear to
race in the Junior TKM 148 Band No Restrictor
Senior Extreme
Use the 115cc engine without any carb restrictor
for the 152 & 165 bands, and with Blue carb restrictor
for the lighter 146 band. Can be raced in direct
drive format, with the optional clutch and hand held
electric lightweight starter, or the TAG touch & go
version. This larger capacity engine gives greater power for seniors with increased mid range
torque. Horstman clutched engine can quickly be
converted to direct drive if required by removal of the
complete clutch and then fitting the special long direct
drive sprocket & nut. Please note that
direct drive engine with shorter style crank half can
not be made into clutched engines without the fitment of
a longer style clutch crank half.
How to choose what band suits you
taking into account the minimum
permitted driver weight in full race equipment.
146 Blue band No Min / 152 band is 68 Kg / 165 band
is 80 Kg and drivers age must be 35yrs +.
There is no minimum driver weight restriction to race in
the Senior TKM 146 Band with Blue Carb Restrictor
Drivers must be a minimum of 68 Kg with all race gear to
race in the Senior TKM 152 Band with No Carb Restrictor
Drivers must be a minimum of 80 Kg with all race gear to
race in the Senior TKM 165 Band with No Carb Restrictor
Both 100cc & 115cc TKM engines are built by Tal-Ko to
its own exacting standards. Carefully developed
regulations restrict tuning to very minor levels to keep
down costs. So successful has been this policy that
engines first made 10 years ago and more are still
capable of winning.
So tough is the engine that it will often be used for
a year by club racers without being serviced. In
corporate use it powers the Club 100 karts used for as
much 80 hours between rebuilds.
