JUNIOR TKM RE-LAUNCHES IN
NORTHERN IRELAND
The Junior Formula TKM
class is being re-introduced
to Northern Ireland to meet
the need for a class that
offers excellent value for
money and close, equal
racing.
The North of
Ireland Karting Association
has agreed a plan with
Tal-Ko, owners of the
Formula TKM category, to
launch the class over the
next two years and then
continue its development.
A Tal-Ko Veloce kart
complete with V-clutch
fitted TKM BT82 engine will
be used at a variety of
motorsport shows and kart
racing events in Northern
Ireland. The kart will also
be used to give potential
TKM Junior drivers a taste
for the class at various
test days.
The class
will run to normal TKM rules
subject to two changes.
First the karts must all
make use of the clutched
only TKM BT82 engine, and
secondly initially karts
must be pre 2011 year
models. It was decided to
exclude direct drive and TAG
version engines to keep the
class simple and even.
Explaining the reasons for
the initiative NIKA
Secretary Keith Wilkinson
said: “We have become aware
that we are losing young
drivers because there is no
suitable class for them.
“We have a strong Cadet
category with emphasis on
the Honda and its low
running costs. But then the
next step is to Mini Max
with very high costs and
many technical issues to be
understood. The result is
many young drivers and their
parents simply move away to
some other sport.
“We see Junior TKM as the
way to stop that loss of
drivers away from karting.
It offers very close and
equal racing – and at
sensible money. It is the
logical way forward.”
Tal-Ko boss Alan Turney
welcomed the move saying:
“We are delighted to work
with NIKA in re-establishing
Junior TKM. We have always
worked at ensuring the TKM
classes offer the best value
racing you can get for your
pound, and that it gives an
even playing field for
everyone. We are seeing a
move right across the UK
back to the TKM class.”
Former Northern Ireland top
TKM drivers include 2009
BTCC champion Colin
Turkington and Adam Carroll
a former champion in A1 GP.
NIKA are planning to
run a number of Junior TKM
events in 2013 before
stepping up to a full
championship in 2014.
