MSA CLEAR THE WAY FOR
FORMULA TKM
2-STROKE KARTS OVER BODYWORK
The Motor Sports
Association has clarified its special dispensation to drivers in
the Formula TKM 2-stroke classes which will ease the
introduction of CIK homologated crash tested plastic bodywork
and bars in the classes.
Currently karts from the 2004 & 2007 TKM homologation periods
must use the full CIK crash tested plastic bodywork and mounting
bars as from Jan 1st 2008, but users of older karts from the
1998 & 2001 homologation periods were given a dispensation from
this rule until Jan 1st 2009.
Now the MSA has agreed an extension and full clarification on
the regulations which will make the future much easier and
clearer for drivers of all TKM homologated karts.
With immediate effect the karts from the 2004 homologation
period which were left out of the original dispensation must now
use CIK crash tested plastic bodywork but they do not have to
use the CIK crash tested mounting bars if these don't fit
without chassis modifications
From Jan 1st 2009 onwards all karts older than 2007 that do not
already have the correct mounting points for crash-tested CIK
bodywork, must use the new style CIK plastic bodywork elements.
But they do not have to have the CIK crash tested mounting bars
if these don't fit without chassis modifications.
Effectively it means that drivers of older karts will still be
able to use them with no problem simply by modifying mounting
bars to take the new CIK crash tested plastic bodywork, which in
most cases is a simple job.
Alan Turney, Managing Director of Tal-Ko Racing, organisers of
the Formula TKM classes, said: "We are delighted that the MSA
has sensibly clarified this situation. Without it we would have
faced the prospect of many karts simply becoming unusable even
though they are only a few years old. This will ensure that
owners get a full homologation life from their karts."
The full wording of the clarification is as follows:
With immediate effect, the MSA extends the exemption
shown in Kart Race Yearbook B3.3.14 to include TKM homologated
karts for the period 2004/2006 inclusive on condition that the
plastic elements of CIK crash tested and homologated front
fairing (K.182/183), front panel (Nassau panel) (K.184/185) and
sidepods are fitted to these karts of 2004 - 2006 manufacture in
compliance with K.169. The sidepods, front fairing and
front panel may be from different homologations. These
regulations will become effective for all TKM homologated karts
up to and including 2006 from 1.1.09.
